Diathermy reduces and eliminates visible surface capillary thread veins and spider veins, once treated the capillary dies and the waste is reabsorbed back into the body.  There can be many causes of these damaged capillaries... sun exposure, harsh treatment of the skin and injury such as squeezing.  Exercise, alcohol consumption and emotional upset are also triggers.

These veins also develop as we age and our skin and blood vessels become less elastic, capillaries are delicate blood vessels and the walls of the capillaries are thin with minimal muscle fibre, which means they can easily become broken.
